Dear Ferry Parents:

As some of you know, Jump Rope for Heart has been an annual event here at Ferry for the past 12 years.  It has been especially fun combining efforts to meet at Grosse Pointe North with the other elementary schools in Grosse Pointe.  However, physical education in Grosse Pointe has experienced drastic changes and cut backs this school year.  These cutbacks resulted in the loss of  7 teaching positions in the physical education department in Grosse Pointe, primarily at the secondary level.  The effects of this reduction in staffing created a “shift” in personnel with less senior teachers losing their positions.  Several of the teachers that had participated in the multi-school event are no longer available to “share the load”.

Therefore, I am sorry to announce that there will not be a Jump Rope for Heart at the high school this year.  However, I do have a plan for an alternative event.

I would like to propose a Jump Rope for Heart for our 3rd, 4th and 5th graders within their regular physical education classes the week of  February 12th, 2007.   As has been the procedure in the past, students wishing to collect donations for the American Heart Association and the worthwhile causes this organization supports will be given a donation envelope.  Students choosing to collect donations will receive the corresponding gift items from the American Heart Association approximately 4 weeks after the event.

The event will be organized similarly to the multi-school one with several “stations” including basketball, fitness, Speed Stacking and of course lots of jumping rope!  I will send home more information as the event approaches.

As always, I feel very fortunate for the support I have so generously received from the Ferry community for Jump Rope for Heart.  I will miss the experience of participating with the other schools and my colleagues.  I will especially miss the joy of returning Ferry student alumni to help and volunteer for this event.

I actually considered the idea of doing away with it all together.  A number of students and parents strongly objected to that!   Therefore, I am hopeful that this new approach to Jump Rope for Heart will still teach the lessons of giving to a worthwhile cause while emphasizing exercise and good health.

Please contact me with questions or concerns in person or by email.  I really do value your input.

 Sincerely,

Nicol Brumme
