Studies Artifacts Mr. Buckman's Second Grade Class |
| Recently, Mr. Buckman showed you two artifacts and then asked you to make a hypothesis about what they were used to do. Your hypothesis was made after closely looking at the artifact for clues. These clues would include color, size, shape, any writing, and any spots that show wear. Look below for the answers to your inquiry. | ||
| Artifact #1 It is a sock darner. It was a tool use to repair hole in socks. It would be put inside the sock, against a hole. A needle and thread would be used to sew the hole shut. This tool is not used much anymore, but Mr. Buckman had used them to repair his socks when he was in high school and college. Here are some other examples of sock darners: This sock darner is like ours: This darner is made green cased glass and is shaped
like the end of a foot:

Artifact #2 It is called an insulator. These are put in between power lines and utility poles to keep the electricity from coming down the utility pole. They come in many shapes and sizes. Our insulator is made of glass and is old. The power lines on the utility poles still need insulators today, but most of these insulators are made of ceramics.
