VOLLEYBALL REVIEW SHEET

A regulation game consists of two teams of six players

PLAYERS: 

Front Row Player:  These players mostly set the ball up for each other to spike and try to

                                     block their opponents hits.

Back Row Player:   These players mostly bump up the ball to the front row so they 

                                    can set the ball and spike.

 

VOLLEYBALL TERMS:

Forearm Pass or Bump –Players use this when receiving a serve or playing a hard low hit ball.  Players move to the ball in the ready position; keep arms extended and together; follow through with the arms and lift with the legs. 

Set -                  An overhead pass in which the player directs the ball upward.  Fingers are spread and are in a cupped position, contact is made with the pads of the fingers.

Spike             A powerful overhand smash into opposing teams court.  This is done using one hand, with or without jumping. 

Block-              The action of one or more players standing near the net, jumping into the air  the ball with their hands and or arms. 

Fault-               A violation of any rule of play. 

Ace-                A serve that is neither touched nor returned by the receiving team. 

Side Out-        When the receiving team wins the serve back to their team after a fault by the serving team. 

Rotation-          Is done when you earn side out and are about to have a new server on your team.  It is a clockwise movement of players to their new positions. 

Service Area- The area behind the baseline where a players stands while serving the ball. The service area includes the entire width behind the baseline. 

Setter-             The name of the player that most frequently sets the ball up to other front row players to spike. 

Tip or Dink-   This is used instead of a spike to gently send the ball over the net so it will drop over the hands of opposing team blockers or in a open space.  Some players fake a spike before using this skill. 

RULES:

1.      The server must stay behind the baseline (back court line) when serving.

2.      Players may not touch the net.

3.      The ball may be played a maximum of 3 times by a team before going over the net.

4.      The same player may not touch the ball twice in a row or in succession.

5.      A ball touching the boundary line is considered in-bounds.

6.      A team wins when it scores 25 points and has a two- point lead; otherwise play continues until the two-point advantage is obtained.

7.      At the end of the game, teams exchange sides and the team that didn’t serve first to start the match, gets to serve to begin the second game.

8.      A point occurs when:

a.       The ball touches the floor

b.      A team plays the ball more than 3 times.

c.       A player touches the net.

d.      A player touches the ball twice consecutively, except when blocking. (a Block is not considered one of the 3 hits per side)

e.       A player lands in the opponents’ court during the play.

f.        The server steps onto the court before the ball has left their hand.

9.      Teams rotate when they get the ball back from the other team and are about to start serving.

10.   Volleyball is played with rally scoring.  Rally scoring means either the serving or receiving team may score a point on any possession when the other team commits a fault.  If the receiving team earns the point, it is also a side out, and they have won the serve.
