Qualifying
for Title I

NEW STUDENTS TO DEFER ELEMENTARY: All new Students to Defer
Elementary are tested in the areas of reading and math. These test
scores and the parent and classroom teacher input qualify a new student for Title I
support.
KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS: Kindergarten students receive Title I
support during the second semester.
Students qualify based on
classroom performance, informal testing by the classroom teacher, and parent
and teacher input.
FIRST GRADE STUDENTS: First grade students qualify for
Title I based on the California Achievement Test (CAT) math scores in
computation and concepts. The California Achievement Test is given to
all recommended first graders. It is administered in a small group
setting at the beginning of each school year, or individually if a child
transfers from another school after the start of the year. Parent and
teacher input are also
important factors when qualifying first grade students for Title I support.
SECOND THROUGH FIFTH GRADE STUDENTS: Second through
fifth grade students that have attended Defer the previous year qualify for
Title I based on parent recommendation, Reading Specialist recommendation,
and /or student performance on
standardized tests such as the Metropolitan Achievement Test (MAT),
Comprehensive Test Program IV (CTP IV), Grosse Pointe Language Arts and Math
Assessment (PreMEAP), and Michigan Education Assessment Program (MEAP).
