HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR BOOK
- Carry your book home and to school in your backpack to protect it from rain or snow.
- Keep your book in a special place at home so you can always find it.
- Make sure your hands are clean when handling the book.
- Eat before or after reading your book so you do not get food on your book.
- Keep your book away from pets. They may chew on them.
- Keep your books away from babies. They may color in them or tear pages.
- Turn the pages carefully from the top corner.
- Use a bookmark instead of folding corners.
- Never color or write in library books.
- Turn your book in on time and in good condition so other students can enjoy it too.
HOW TO CHOOSE A GOOD BOOK
- Five Finger Test (Use this to find a book at your reading level!)
- Open up your book to a page in the middle.
- Read the page.
- Hold up a finger for every word you do not know.
- If you have 5 fingers up at the end of the page, the book is too difficult for you to read by yourself.
- If you have no fingers up, the book may be too easy. (You can still read it for fun though.)
HOW TO FIND A GOOD BOOK
- Ask a friend if he or she has read a good book lately.
- Ask a teacher of librarian to suggest a book you might like.
- If you recently read a book that you enjoyed, read a different book by the same author.
- Explore the library for something that catches your eye and then read the summary on the back cover or inside the front cover.
- Don't always judge a book by the cover. Some of the best books may look a little worn because they have been loved so much.
- Read the first page to see if it grabs your attention.
- Look at the illustrations.
- Look at the book return cart for books that other students have been reading.
- Read about your hobbies or things that you want to learn more about.
- Explore the non-fiction section of the library.
