Text Box: Life Skills is a great class where the students explore three areas of life.  First they learn about the importance of family, their types and traditions, about heredity and environment, and child care and development.  The student will apply this knowledge with a “hands-on” assignment by becoming “egg-baby parents” for 3 days.  This makes their parents “egg-baby” grandparents.  Are you ready for this?   We also discuss nutritional snacks and safe and appropriate toys for children.
A second unit we cover is sewing.  The students will be constructing a sewing project.  This year the students will be making an apron  in the fabric of their choice. The students will learn about fabrics and their qualities. They will learn how to use the sewing machine correctly and safely.  After this unit they will be able to construct simple garments, mend and repair clothing, sporting items, etc.  The guys become great future tailors and the girls seamstresses.
The third unit of study is the Food Unit.  The food pyramid is discussed and the importance of eating nutritionally.  The class is divided up into 5-6 kitchens, depending on the size of the class, and each student is given tasks to perform during the cooking lab.  These tasks are rotated for each cooking assignment.  The students will learn about safety in the kitchen, how to measure correctly, the proper names of the equipment, and how to cook.  They will be given an assignment where they will be cooking a “dish” at home for the family.  You are in for a treat!  The future chefs of America are about to be discovered.
Thank you in advance for all your support and parent participation.  From time to time I do need parents &/or grandparents to come into class to help. A letter will be sent home during these times; I will need parent involvement  when we “birth” the “egg-babies”, when we are sewing, and when we begin the cooking labs.
