New to the speech-language program? Here's some
information for you!
What steps are involved in getting your child signed up for
speech-language support?
-
Your child is referred by you or by his teacher for an
observation of his speech skills.
-
The speech pathologist listens to your child speaking within
the classroom setting.
-
The speech pathologist contacts you with a recommendation.
A complete evaluation of your child may be in order, or homework with an
observation at a later date may be recommended. It is also possible that
your child's speech skills will be found within normal developmental limits.
-
Before an evaluation can be completed, you will need to give
your written permission. The speech pathologist will phone you to schedule a
meeting. Please see sequence of meetings below.
-
The speech pathologist will assess your child's speech, as
well as hearing. This assessment will be conducted during the school day, at a
time that is selected by the classroom teacher.
-
The speech pathologist will phone you to schedule a meeting to
review the test results.
-
You will attend a meeting (see below). If your child
qualifies for speech support, you must sign persmission for you child to
attend speech.
-
Your child will be enrolled in speech for one year starting at
the time you signed the speech-language paperwork. For example: if your
child was enrolled in October, he will automatically be re-enrolled in the
program at the start of the following school year.
Meetings with the Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP)
In order to enroll your child in speech, you will be required to
attend the following meetings:
First Meeting: The Evaluation Review Meeting (ERM)
At this meeting, you give the SLP
background information you would like her to have. You also sign a form
which
gives the speech-language pathologist permission to evaluate your child.
Second Meeting: The Multidisciplinary Evaluation Team
Meeting (MET) At this meeting,
test results are shared with you and the classroom teacher.
Third Meeting: The Individualized Educational Plan Team
Meeting (IEPT) At this meeting,
an intervention plan is formulated for your child. This meeting will
include the
speech pathologist, the classroom teacher, and a district representative,
possibly the principal. This plan will include the amount of time your
child
will spend in speech-language services and the goals your child will work on.
Your input at this meeting is highly valued. Please share your priorities
concerning
your child's goals at this meeting.
Note: The MET Meeting and the IEPT Meeting are often done on the same day.
Next Meeting: IEP Annual Review Meeting
One year from the
initial IEPT Meeting, you will meet
with the speech-language pathologist and the classroom teacher, to renew
your child's speech services or to exit him from speech.
Conferences: You are welcome to schedule a conference with
the SLP in November or March
when you meet with your child's general education teacher.
Looking forward to meeting with you!
