CONTROLLING THE MOTIONS OF OBJECTS
A simple machine alters the
size or direction of a force. The simplest machines include the
lever and and the inclined plane. The pulley, wheel and axle,
wedge, and screw are also examples of variations of the lever and
inclined plane. All machines, no matter how complicated, are made
up of one or more simple machines. Machines help to make work
easier, but they need a force and energy in order to be able to
do work or move an object.
We can use machines to
1) transfer forces from one place to another
2) increase the amount of force
3) change the direction of the force
4) increase the speed of doing work
A ramp is an inclined plane. 
An object can be moved on an inclined plane without actually
being lifted. The inclined plane reduces the force neede to push
or pull an object to a desired level. Less force is needed using
the inclined plane than if you were to lift the object straight
up. However, when using the inclined plane, the object must be
moved over a greater distance to reach the desired level.
Therefore, inclined planes make work easier, but do not
ultimately save energy.
