If you've been through the student projects section, I'm sure you've noticed that all of our videos are in .WMV format.  I bet you probably have a few questions about the format, so here is a brief Q&A.

What does WMV stand for?
It stands for Windows Media Video.

What is WMV?
It is a highly compressed form of video that is designed to work with Windows Media Player.

What do I need to play .WMV files?
All you need is the latest version of Windows Media Player.  All school networked computers have the latest version, so you should have no problem viewing these movies at school.  Just to be safe, anything from version 7.01.00.3055 and up will play them for sure.

Why did you go with the WMV format and not something else like MPEG or AVI?
Our main concern with choosing a format was file size. We feel that WMV can offer the highest quality video with a small enough file size for dial up users to download at home. We also planned on creating so many videos to download, and we didn't want to take up an insane amount of web space. We wanted to put up as many files as possible, and huge file sizes would not allow that.

What do you use to save these student projects to your computer as a movie file?
We use Windows Movie Maker to save all of our projects as WMV movies. It is a very user friendly program with basic functions.  Since all of our actual video editing is done on Casablanca video editors, we really didn't need an advanced computer video editor to do the job.  We only use Windows Movie Maker to record video in WMV format, and then to trim then down.
