Welcome to American Literature

This course presents the study of American literature through its major periods. Students read short stories, novels, dramas, poetry, and non-fiction. Composition work emphasizes formal research and various types of essays including literary criticism and argumentation. Students will create a variety of texts and counter-texts as they explore literary works through a variety of theoretical lenses.  Through reading, writing, speaking, listening, and viewing, students explore various themes of American literature. Required reading includes The Great Gatsby by Fitzgerald, Death of a Salesman by Miller, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Twain, The Catcher in the Rye by Salinger, Walden and Civil Disobedience by Thoreau, and The Souls of Black Folk by Dubois.
