Autism Spectrum Disorder Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental disability. It is a neurological disorder that affects the functioning and normal development of the brain. Its symptoms vary greatly. Children and adults with ASD typically have difficulties in verbal and non-verbal communication, social interactions, and leisure or play activities (Autism Society of America, 2004). ASD affects an estimated 1 in 250 births (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2003). Although much research has been conducted, much more is needed. At this time, there is no known cause or cure for Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Autism Autism is a developmental disability, which affects the way the brain functions. It typically interferes with the development of communication skills, social skills, reasoning skills, and the interpretation of sensory information of an individual. There may be unusual attachments to objects and resistance to change.
Asperger's Syndrome Asperger's Syndrome is a developmental disability which affects the way a person communicates, develops and maintains social relationships, and interprets their environment. They will often exhibit obsessive interests and poor motor control. They have normal or above normal intelligence. |
