Classroom projects will incorporate the same concepts that you will find in any art class at North. We do have different tools to complete these projects. Sometimes, our approach to art will be affected by our collective knowledge of these tools.
1. Illustrator CS3
Chapter 00: What’s New in Illustrator (snowboard lesson)
Chapter 1: Quick Tour (optional)
Chapter 2: Selecting and Aligning
Chapter 3: Creating Shapes
Chapter 4: Transforming Objects
2. Logo Design Unit
Logo Hunt (7 points for one day's work not bad!)
- We will use one class period to go on-line and find 7 interesting logos that fulfill the following criterion (one point each). Save these to your folder on the shared drive and prepare to show them to the class in order to get your points.
- · Animal imagery or shapes (1 pt.)
- · Human shapes (1 pt.)
- · Original lettering that has been created exclusively for that company (1 pt.)
- · Original shapes that have been created by the graphic design artist for that company (1 pt.)
- · Logos that use a surface texture or an interesting lighting effect (1 pt.)
- · Find a logo that you think totally stinks and tell us why! (1 pt.)
- · Find a logo that is recognizable worldwide. Why is this an example of good design? (1 pt.)
Personal Logo Design (20 points)
Design a Personal Logo intended to represent you! Use your initials, first name, etc. to get started. Use the vector tools in Painter to customize shapes and letters. This logo will be placed on your web site later, so make it cool! Consider the following:
Consider the placement of all components carefully as well as your palate (limit your colors and be consistent with them).
Give one shape more emphasis than the others. As the "center of interest" this should be located in a position that provides balance.
Vary shapes, letters and elements carefully.
Use vector tools to create original shapes and letters (see demo)
_____(5) Vector tools were used to create interesting original shapes.
_____(5) Your shapes are varied in size, but are arranged in a way that seems balanced.
_____(5) One letter or shape is given more visual emphasis.
_____(5) Carefully use color, textures, and lighting effects.
_____(20) Total
Animated Logo Design (20 points)
Design an animated logo using the same kinds of tools and considerations that you used in the previous "Personal Logo" assignment. This time, however, you will animate the logo. You may use Painter's animation tools or Imageready's animation tools (better for optimizing for the web).
Consider the placement of all components carefully.
Give one shape more emphasis than the others. As the "center of interest" this should be located in a position that provides balance.
Vary shapes, letters and elements carefully.
Use vector tools to create original shapes and letters
_____(5) Originality
_____(5) Motion of shapes seems balanced and smooth.
_____(5) One letter or shape is given more emphasis.
_____(5) In addition to motion of shapes, you also shift or more coloring, texture, or lighting effects.
_____(20) Total
3. Graphic User Interface Design
GUI Hunt (5 points)
We will use one class period to go on-line and find 5 interesting GUIs that fulfill the following criterion (one point each):
- Find a GUI that emulates materials not usually seen on a computer screen. Can you find something that is different from the standard flat color or brushed metal look of some GUIs? (1 pt.)
- Find a GUI that would be used by Austin Powers. It should be groovy, baby. (1 pt.)
- Find a GUI that totally embodies a concept related to either music, sports, or Hollywood. (1 pt.)
- Find a GUI that uses non-rectangular buttons. (1 pt.)
- Find a GUI that appears to be the coolest thing you have ever seen on a computer. (1 pt.)
- Be prepared to present your findings to the class on screen.
Graphic User Interface Design (20 pts.)
- Consider the placement of all components carefully. It may be hard to balance these two concepts: ease of use and "coolness."
- Vary shapes, letters and elements carefully.
- Use vector tools to create original shapes.
_____(5) Your design is original and interesting.
_____(5) Organization of shapes seems balanced.
_____(5) Gui appears to be easy to use. Controls are easy to read/use.
_____(5) Coloring, texture, or lighting effects are very very cool. Use a well thought out color palette.
_____(20) Total
4. Bryce Still Assignment: Futuristic Architecture/City
A. First complete and present a presentation on a famous architect. Mr. Thies will assign everyone a different architect from the 20th and 21st centuries. (20 pts)
B. Next, sse your imagination and Bryce to create a multi-shaped object that might function as one of the following: city municipal building (City Hall, Police Station, etc.) theatre/entertainment complex, football stadium, etc. In creating city, please keep the following in mind:
· remember to group objects if you want to move them together.
· save your work frequently
· consider your textures carefully
· vary your shapes - try new things (especially the bolean objects!)
You will be graded as follows:
_____(5) Use a "customized" landform (use Photoshop to make a landscape template as demonstrated in class prior to Spring Break - ask if you need another demo!)
_____(5) Use at least 10 grouped objects in creating at least one of the buildings.
_____(5) Style at least one building after a building that your assigned Architect created. Be prepared to point out that building to your teacher when you present your city.
_____(5) Have at least 10 buildings in your city. Use examples from http://www.surrealplaces.com to inspire you.
_____20 Total Possible
C. Create an animated "walk" through your city.
- smooth camera motions require that you move multiple scrubber segments
- render as an avi and save to your assignments folder (these make good entries for Scholastics)
- have fun! remember you have the option of learning Blender if you feel that Bryce is too limited for you.
5. Animation
Animation Hunt (5 pts.)
We will use one class period to go on-line to find interesting animation shorts to show to the class. In order to qualify for the five points, your animation has to be computer generated. Movies or videos of real life events will not qualify. Make these animations short and only note the web address. Do not download them to you account. You can show the class the movie on the big screen.
Storyboard (15 pts.)
A. After your initial brainstorming, you will create a storyboard with your animation idea outlined in step by step drawings. The diagrams can be simple, however, the sequence of events should be correct. (10 points)
B. Create a central character that we identify with throughout the animation.
C. Give the character some sort of a dilemma or problem to be solved during the course of the animation.
D. Consider that you will most likely have to draw this character with the drawing pad or with vector objects. Make that character easy to reproduce, but still interesting enough to keep our attention.
_____(5 pts.) Central character, object or view point is easily identified.
_____(5 pts.) A dilemma or problem is presented and "solved."
_____(5 pts.) This idea is presented in a neat and clean manner and appears to be "do-able."
_____(15 pts.) Total for storyboard
Animation (30 pts.)
Create your final animation using either a "hand-drawn" technique or with vector tools as in Painter or Bryce. Check with me before you attempt a Bryce animation. We can only use Bryce for a limited number of animations as render time is a concern.
_____(5 pts.) Your animation follows the story line specified in your storyboard.
_____(5 pts.) Animated motions are smooth.
_____(5 pts.) You used a consistent color palatte.
_____(5 pts.) Your story is interesting to view.
_____(10 pts.) Your animation is very entertaining to view and the audience loved it.
_____(30 pts.) Total
7. Exam Project
Portfolio Presentation (Web or Multi-media Animation)
Web page creation project. You are on your own in creating this web page. I will be expecting you to have the major concepts narrowed down before you begin designing the graphics. A separate worksheet outlining all of the requirements, etc. will be made available three weeks prior to the final exam. Your page is expected to be an on-line portfolio showing your work in Computer Graphics and/or other classes here at North. We will not post your page on the school network because of privacy concerns. But it is expected that you will burn and save this project as you save all of you art work.
If you choose to post this page with an outside web provider, please consult you parents!
