    Chapter 4: Transforming Objects

2. Magazine Advertisement

Advertisement  Hunt  (7 points for one day's work – not bad!)

We will use one class period to go on-line and find  interesting logos that fulfill the following criterion (one point each).  Save these to your folder on the shared drive and prepare to show them to the class in order to get your points. I already found these examples.  Good luck on your hunt!

         o Animal imagery   (1 pt.)
         o Human figure (1 pt.)
o Original lettering that has been created exclusively for that company. (1 pt.)
o Original shapes that have been created by the graphic design artist for that company (1 pt.)
o Logos that use a surface texture or an interesting lighting effect (1 pt.)
o Find text that has been presented in a new and exciting way  (1 pt.)
o Find an ad that relates in "style" to an entire product line recognizable worldwide.  (1 pt.)

Advertisement  Design  (20 points)

Design a full page magazine ad intended to advertise an Art class, a product or a service.

Consider the following:

o Consider the placement of all components carefully as well as your palate (limit your colors and be consistent with them).
o Give one area more emphasis than the others. As the "center of interest" this should be located in a position that provides balance. (use the "rule of thirds)
o Vary shapes, letters and elements carefully.
o Use vector tools to create original shapes and letters
o Use at least one digital

_____(5) The image(s) have been adjusted appropriately for proper brightness and contrast..

_____(5) Your shapes and text are varied in size, but are arranged in a way that seems balanced.

_____(5) You used the rule of thirds in determining the center of interest.

_____(5) Carefully use color, textures, and lighting effects to create interest for your shapes and letters.

           _____(20)  Total

3. Bryce Project

Bryce Still Assignment:  Futuristic Transportation Design (20 points)

Use your imagination and Bryce to create a multi-shaped object that might function as one of the following: spaceship fighter, spaceship cargo vehicle, space station, or ground transport vehicle. I already checked out a few spaceship designs both professional and amateur.   Check out the results on the spaceship design page .  In creating the transportation vehicle, please keep the following in mind:
o remember to group objects if you want to move them together.
         o save your work frequently
         o consider your textures carefully
o vary your shapes - try new things
o include windows/doors/portals, propulsion systems, landing gear

You will be graded as follows:

_____(5) elements of the vehicle appear to be consistent in scale

_____(5) you used textures that appear to be consistent and "make sense" in the context of the vehicle

_____(5) you used multiple objects that you link together

_____(5) vehicle is "awesome" and shows that you did grow in your knowledge of this program

     _____20 Total Possible

X-tra credit bonus component:  Animate your vehicle with either a "walk-around" or a "fly-by." (5 points)

4. Animation Project (Bryce or other method upon approval)

We will do the following:

   * Look at professional animation shorts together as a group (Animation Hunt 5 pts.).
   * Discuss/contemplate a subject/plan for the animation.
   * Create a story board for the animation (15 pts.).
   * Build the objects for the animation in Bryce.
   * Stage and animate the frames in Bryce (20 pts.).

Animation Hunt (5 pts.)

We will use one class period to go on-line to find interesting animation shorts to show to the class.  In order to qualify for the five points, your animation has to be computer generated. Movies or videos of real life events will not qualify. Make these animations short and only note the web address. Do not download them to you account. You can show the class the movie on the big screen.

Animation Subject Matter:

Possible ideas:

   * Short story (Comedy, Tragedy, Romance, etc.)
         1. Main character(s)  (protagonist-good guy, antagonist-bad guy, etc.)
         2. Setting
         3. Events (usually the presentation of a problem that needs solving)
         4. Climax (the point of interest where the problem is solved - probably the focus of the piece)
   * Opening "Trailer" for a television show
         1. Create objects or group of objects that will function as the "subject" for your short.
         2. Setting
         3. Events (movement of objects)
         4. Climax (point at which objects present information to the viewer in a very interesting fashion)
   * Poetry Illustration
         1. Movement with character(s) or environment
         2. Setting
         3. Events
         4. Climax
   * Musical Concept
         1. Character(s)
         2. Setting
         3. Events
         4. Climax

Notes about your animation subject matter...

Students often need to be challenged before they will produce something of note. Without challenges (self imposed or otherwise), I know that my daily ambitions may begin and end with a box of Crispy Creams and a glass of milk (yum). Sometimes under pressure, however, my students demonstrate above average abilities. Therefore, as you sort through your ideas for the animation project, try to think big. In the past, I have asked students to create characters.  These characters could be similar to the "toon" variety or they could involve cutting and pasting digital images.  Below I have outlined a few conceptual ideas for creating original animation shorts.  If you have a better idea for a story or a concept, please don't hesitate to bring it to my attention. In the past few years, I have seen students create/design great things.  As our tools get more sophisticated, we can do even better than those that came before us.  I look forward to seeing more coolness spring forth from the fountain of youthful inspiration that we call North High School.  Please pass the donuts!

Story board (15 pts.)

After your initial brainstorming, you will create a story board with your animation idea outlined in step by step drawings.  The diagrams can be simple, however, the sequence of events should be correct. The easier your plans are to follow, the easier it will be for you to be successful in designing camera angles for the animation.

Your animation short should take advantage of the 3-D software that we have available. Bryce is a nice environment to learn to manipulate.

_____(5 pts.)  Central character is easily identified (if you are making a trailer/promo, you might have a logo in place of a central character).

_____(5 pts.)  A dilemma or problem is presented and "solved."

_____(5 pts.)  This idea is presented in a neat and clean manner and appears to be "do-able."

           ____(15 pts.) Total

Animation (30 pts.)

Create your final animation primarily in the Bryce environment.  You may use the CAD software if you have used it in the past.

_____(5  pts.) Your animation follows the story line specified in your storyboard.

_____(5 pts.)  Animated motions are smooth.

_____(5 pts.)  You used a consistent color palate.

_____(5 pts.)  You used lighting effects and textures to enhance the look of your project.

_____(5 pts.)  Your story is interesting to view.

_____(5 pts.)  Your animation is very entertaining to view and the audience loved it.

           _____(30 pts.) Total

Complete 2 out of the following core projects.

5. Magazine Layout Project

   A. Rough Draft (10 points)

Create a magazine cover layout using original text graphics and original photographs. You will not have a problem picking a magazine title.  If you don't want to emulate a magazine style, then make one up on your own - only make it "good."    :o)

When I ask for original text and graphics, this means that you will be creating the graphics for the title on the computer - you will not simply scan in the text from your magazine.  This will be an interesting exercise in that you will have to duplicate the colors and font used by your chosen magazine - not a difficult task, but something that will take some thinking on your part. If you are making up your own design, then scanning the title won't be an option anyway, so why did you take the time to read this?

You may do the layout in Photoshop exclusively or in MS Publisher with graphics that you create in Photoshop.  Text will be sharper in Publisher so I suggest you use Publisher and Photoshop together for this project.  Some text effects, however, will only be able to be created in Photoshop/Painter.  So, when you create your text in the drawing programs, keep in mind these are raster objects and are not scalable.  Therefore, create them at high resolution (150 ppi at least). It is easier to scale them down than to make them larger (will blur) when you get to Publisher.

   B. Final Draft (20 points)

_____(5 pts.)  Title of magazine (used proper font, color, size, placement, quality/sharpness)

_____(5 pts.)  Balance between images and text.

_____(5 pts.)  Image(s)  (Images are high quality, interesting and capture our attention - remember, people have to want to buy this magazine- you are selling a product.)

_____(5 pts.)  Craftsmanship and attention to details.

_____(20 pts.) Total

6. Brochure Project

   1. Brochure Hunt (extra credit 3 pts.)

Find a commercially/professionally produced brochure that uses title graphics, paragraph text, graphics, and images to advertise/discuss a company's product. Present this brochure to the class for extra credit.

Here are some examples that I found. One is decidedly older than the other. Click on the graphics below to check them out.

   2. Rough Draft  (10 pts.)

Create one or five possible layouts for a trifold (6 sides) brochure.  Do this in pencil on paper. The sketches may be rough. Basically, your rough draft should show the placement of objects on the page and the content. Most likely, you will be advertising a product of some sort.

   3. Final Draft (20 pts
.)

Your final draft should cover the following:

_____(5 pts.) Consistent Color Scheme (pick a dominant color and a limited number of colors that "go with" the dominant color)

_____(5 pts.)  Composition (Balance images, graphics and text.)

_____(5 pts.)  Images (Photographs or hand drawn images are SHARP and  WELL COMPOSED.  Few images taken carelessly will be good enough for this project.)

_____(5 pts.)  Borders (Leave a consistent border around the edge of each page.)

     _____(20 pts.) Total

7. Self-Directed Projects (2 @ 20 pts. each =40 pts.)

Pick 2 projects out of the following options to be completed by you within a 1 1/2 to 2  week time period. There must be something that you are interested in creating.  Here is your chance.  Use your time to work in either Bryce, Photoshop, or even Freehand.  Submit a written proposal for review before you begin.  Possible ideas include:

  2. City of the Future (20 pts.)

Bryce Still Assignment:  Futuristic Architecture/City  (20 points
)

Use your imagination and Bryce to create a multi-shaped object that might function as one of the following: city municipal building (City Hall, Police Station, etc.) theatre/entertainment complex, football stadium, etc.  In creating city, please keep the following in mind:
o remember to group objects if you want to move them together.
         o save your work frequently
         o consider your textures carefully
o vary your shapes - try new things (especially the bolean objects!)

You will be graded as follows:

_____(5) Use a "customized" landform (use Photoshop to make a landscape template as demonstrated in class prior to Spring Break - ask if you need another demo!)

_____(5) Use at least 10 grouped objects in creating at least one of the buildings.

_____(5) Use a variety of textures.

_____(5) Your city is "unconventional" yet the viewer can distinguish it as a city of some sort.

     _____20 Total Possible

   * 5 pts. X-tra credit bonus component: Create an animated "walk" through your city. Design a Restaurant Menu pts.)

Find a restaurant where you think the menu could use some improvement. Design (from "scratch") a menu using original graphics and text.  You may use images of food from other sources (as long as you don't violate copyright laws).  The rubric for grading this project will be almost exactly the same as we had for the brochure.

_____(5 pts.) Consistent Color Scheme (pick a dominant color and a limited number of colors that "go with" the dominant color)

_____(5 pts.)  Composition (Balance images, graphics and text.)

_____(5 pts.) Logo - design a custom logo for the restaurant and feature it consistently throughout the menu.

_____(5 pts.)  Borders (Leave a consistent border around the edge of each page.)

           _____(20 pts.) Total

     6. Final Exam Project:  Portfolio Web Page

Use your talents to create a web page that showcases your graphic work.  Include work from previous CG classes as well.  You might want to get a free account through Yahoo/Geocities/Angelfire, etc. in order to post your page (with your parent's permission) after you build it in our class. Those of you that are moving on to college could use it to showcase your work.

     Remember:
o Design original graphics for navigation.
o Make your site work using Freehand Express (yuck) or some other program that you might have at home.
o Have your site ready for Exam day presentation.
