Independent Living prepares students for the challenges and
responsibilities of early adulthood. The course consists of two
major areas of study: (1) consumerism and money management and (2)
foods and nutrition. The money management units help students
develop skills in earning, spending, and saving, e.g., renting an
apartment and buying a car. The study of foods and nutrition helps
students gain skills in purchasing and preparing food and in
planning meals. The principles of microwave cooking and the use of
the food processor are incorporated in the laboratory experiences.
Students learn to select food to promote good health, weight
control, and physical fitness. Students may wish to combine this
course with Effective Living.
