INTRODUCTION

In an extraordinary moment of adventure, you have convinced the school board that it would be a really great idea to take a field trip to Kenya. The only hitch is that in order to allow this field trip ever again they must have real proof that such a mission was worthwhile. You will create a position paper to the school board which will do just that. This position paper will serve not only to display your new knowledge, but also your amazing capacity to communicate vital, updated information from this part of the world.
You have visited Kenya at such an exciting and strange time. Everything seems to be changing rapidly. People are migrating, disease is spreading, the economy is developing, and the cheetah are running! Can you keep up with it all? Absolutely - with a little help from your friends.

THE TASK

Each member of your report group of four people will select a different theme-based topic to report on from the list below.

Region: How has urbanization affected Kenya

Movement: What has been Kenya’s pattern of economic activity from colonization to independence

Place: How does the spread of AIDS/HIV affect Kenya

H.E.I.: What role do public parks play in Kenya

THE PROCESS

How will you go about doing this?

First, Create a team of four (4) students. Each of you should select a different topic from those listed.

Then, Research your topic using only the resources listed above.
To limit websurfing confusion YOU MAY NOT SEARCH BEYOND THESE PARAMETERS. You should take notes from the screen...that means prepare to hug a tree because there will be NO PRINTING of research.

Next, Write your 250 word essay on Microsoft Word.
For all topics you may include some generalizations about Africa as a whole, but be sure to be specific to Kenya for the bulk of your writing.
Use solid facts/figures/statistics to back up your points.
Be sure to include at least one picture to illustrate your point.
To add your picture to your document:

Have your MS Word document open. Then open the picture website.
Right click on your chosen photo. Select "Copy."
Return to your written document. Place the cursor where you want the photo to appear.
Right click. Select "Paste." Your photo should appear!

Finally, Combine your final product with that of your partners and turn it in as one complete position paper to the school board.
Hint: I suggest that everybody in the group reads/edits eachother's position paper contribution, as you will have to draw upon this cumulative knowledge to answer the focus question on Tuesday (see evaluation section for details).

EVALUATION

The final product is due on Monday, March 22 at the end of the hour
This webquest is worth a test grade
Students will be graded individually based upon their topic using the social studies grading rubric AND as a group based upon group cooperation, effective use of class time, and response to focus question given on Tuesday, March 23.
